Best for beginners
Gas is an essential and recurring expense for many Americans — which is why adding one of the best credit cards for gas is a great way to maximize these purchases. Whether you’re looking to earn airline miles, credit card points or cash-back rewards, there are many great options to save at the pump.
At The Points Guy, we’re passionate about helping you earn the best return on the purchases you’re already making, so we’ve curated a list of the best credit cards for gas. Consider adding one of these to your wallet ahead of your next fill-up.
We included cards that featured solid welcome bonuses and a variety of minimum spend thresholds to meet your budget.
Our top picks feature varying annual fees that provide different levels of benefits to cardholders.
We selected cards that earn on gas purchases as well as other popular bonus category options.
The best cards provide you with various redemption options to select from, including cash back, points and miles.
In addition to earning rates and lucrative welcome bonuses, many of our top picks also offer travel and insurance perks.
Gas purchases are a key benefit for TPG readers, with 63% ranking bonus earnings on gas purchases as a top-three priority for earning rewards on their cards. The best gas cards offer bonus rewards that can help you save every time you fill up. So whether you’re filling up for your daily commute or a road trip, having a gas rewards card helps you get the most out of every gallon.
Like with any credit card, the decision around which gas card to choose should be based on your spending habits and what type of rewards you’re looking to earn. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is a solid choice for those looking for cash-back rewards on gas purchases (3% back at U.S. gas stations). Cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit or at Amazon.com checkout. However, if you’re interested in making the most of rotating bonus categories, the Chase Freedom Flex® offers 5% cash back on select bonus categories that change each quarter with no annual fee (up to $1,500 in combined spending each quarter; activation required). With multiple options, the decision you make on a gas credit card ultimately comes down to how you want to maximize rewards and what your financial goals are.
Here are some of the main points to consider when choosing a credit card for gas:
Choose a gas credit card with a generous sign-up bonus that you can easily meet the spending requirements for within your budget. Welcome bonuses are a solid way to rack up points, miles or cash back, and you'll often earn more with the sign-up bonus than you would with regular everyday spending.
Find a gas card that comes with an annual fee within your budget. You'll also want to consider if the benefits and perks on the card outweigh the annual fee.
You'll certainly want to select a credit card that earns at a solid rate on gas to use at the pump, but you also may want to consider the other bonus categories on a gas card and how you would maximize those.
Tips on how to maximize your spending at the pump and get value on gas
There isn’t one gas credit card that is perfect for everyone. As is always the case when deciding which card to take out, it comes down to picking a card (or cards) that will provide you with the most value given your own personal spending habits, preferences and financial goals.
For example, if you’re a loyal Costco shopper, using the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is a sensible option since it rewards you with 5% cash back on gas at Costco and 4% cash back on other eligible gas and EV charging purchases for the first $7,000 in combined spend per year, then 1% thereafter.
On the other hand, if you could do with some extra cash, focus your attention on cards with no annual fee. Or, check to see which cards offer cash back as a sign-up bonus, like the Chase Freedom Unlimited®.
For the typical U.S. household, gasoline purchases are the ninth-largest categorized expense for credit card spending in a typical year.
You probably shouldn’t make gas rewards your only priority when choosing your next credit card, but it’s an important factor if you’re driving the family around regularly. As always, your best bet is to find a card that offers great bonus category rewards on the spending you do most frequently, so if gas is a major part of your budget, make sure you consider at least one of the credit cards on this list.
You can apply for a gas credit card like you would apply for any credit card – online, by mail or by phone. The easiest option is to do it online. A credit card issuer will ask for some personal information, including your name, contact information, annual income, Social Security number and other financial details. You’ll be asked to read the terms and conditions of the card’s benefits, interest rates and applicable fees.
Once you apply, many issuers will give you a decision in just a few seconds, but you could end up having to wait for up to two weeks for an answer.
It’ll be no surprise to hear that gas credit cards reward those who use them when they fill up their vehicles at gas stations.
The best gas credit cards offer at least a 3% return in rewards on gas purchases and aren’t usually affiliated with any specific gas retailer meaning there are no brand or location restrictions on your cash back or points earning. These cards also often have perks for spending in other categories like groceries, travel and leisure.
Yes. Using a credit card for gas purchases and paying the statement balance on time each month is one way to help increase your credit score and build credit.
